PROGRAMMES

The 6 programmes which the organisation intends to majorly focus on are:

  • Legal Aid Services– Advice and Representation;

Time and again, we put up legal aid clinics where our lead advocates and paralegals offer legal advice to members of the community and where there is a need for legal representation; our pro bono advocates usually take the matter further.

  • Legal Education –through Seminars and Workshops;

In these workshops and seminars, we train both the adults and children on various aspects of the law. We take it upon ourselves to ensure that members of the community are well versed with the provisions in Children Act, 2022 Laws of Kenya and the Convention on the Rights of the Child (CRC), so that the children, their parents and teachers can always make informed choices whenever faced with a legal matter where the child’s interest is at stake. We also train the adults on various aspects of the law, both local and international, so that they may be in a position to defend themselves appropriately whenever faced with a legal matter, as they wait for the services of a counsel.

  • Legal Advice– to remand prisoners and sentenced prisoners;

As an organisation, we do conduct legal education seminars to train both remand and sentenced prisoners. Through one-on-one consultations, we advise remand prisoners on how to prepare for court and the best way to conduct their case while in court. We also assist those serving their sentences to lodge an appeal if there seems to be high chances of success in the appeal.

  • Alternative Justice System(AJS) promotion;

AJS are initiatives that can be taken to attain equality and equity for all members of a particular cultural, political and social identity. Article 159 (2) (c) of the Constitution of Kenya allows the courts and tribunals to promote alternative forms of dispute resolution such as mediation, arbitration, negotiation, facilitation, and conciliation. As an organisation working with the communities at the grassroots, we promote AJS by partnering with trained mediators who occasionally assist the parties in dispute to come up with a binding solution by themselves, thereby fostering the existing relations.

  • Governance and Human Rights – with adherence to Articles 10 and 232 of the Kenyan Constitution, 2010;

We act as the peoples’ watchdog by ensuring that State organs, State officers, public officers, and all persons adhere to the national values and principles of governance, as stipulated in Article 10 of the Constitution of Kenya, in their undertakings. These include: patriotism, national unity, social justice, human rights, non-discrimination and protection of the marginalised, good governance, integrity, transparency and accountability. In addition, we ensure that the values and principles of public service are strictly followed as envisioned in Article 232 of the Constitution of Kenya. They include: high standards of professional ethics, effective use of resources, transparency, and representation of Kenya’s diverse communities.

With regards to human rights, we take it upon ourselves to ensure that all persons enjoy the fundamental rights as envisioned by the United Nations in the Universal Declaration of Human Rights; be it Civil, Political, Economic, Cultural, or Social right.

  • Stakeholders Engagement and Public Interest Litigation;

In collaboration with the Ministry of Health, both at the national and county levels, we train Community Health Workers (CHW) and the Community Health Volunteers (CHV) on the legal rights of patients with a view of ensuring that they provide quality health care to all persons. In addition, we also partner with the police and medical professionals (doctors & nurses) from both National and County governments, training them on how to handle victims of defilement, rape and Gender-Based Violence (GBV) so that evidence is not tampered with, thus reducing chances of miscarriage of justice due to lack of concrete evidence. Moreover, we partner with civil organisations working at the grassroots level such as Community Bases Organisations (CBOs) and Self Help Groups (SHGs) and other non-state actors to ensure that the citizens enjoy their Economic and Social rights such as the right to: health, education, adequate food and clean water, clean and healthy environment.

Whenever the rights of the members of the communities where we operate have been infringed, whether by state actors, a group of individuals, or an individual, it is our policy that we take such matters to court through a petition and follow it through to its logical conclusion.
