MS. SUSAN ACHIENG OBIERO

Ms. Obiero holds a Degree in Law from Egerton University and is an Associate Member of the Chartered Institute of Arbitrators. Driven by her passion for justice, she focuses on collaborative communication to come to fair conclusions. She is devoted to supporting the legal empowerment of poor and vulnerable communities within Homa Bay County through the use of a combination of legal and non-legal tools, including mediation, advocacy, education, and community organizing; while focusing on developing, training, and institutionalizing the work of community-based paralegals.

Through legal aid programs, she addresses various justice problems by applying the knowledge of formal law and her familiarity with local customs to navigate between the two systems for purposes of solving the most common justice problems that community members face.

Noting the County’s high HIV prevalence she has, over the years, collaborated with DREAMS, FIDA Kenya, the County Government of Homa Bay, Gender Violence Recovery Center and Adolescent Girls and Young Women (AGYW) who have been trained by KELIN, to provide free legal and medical services concurrently through medico-legal clinics. As a result, the County has emerged as a beacon of success in the fight against HIV alongside Gender-based violence.
